A Note on Inspiration in Business
by Alline Anderson, owner, Milkweed Mercantile
One of the life-changing moments I've had while creating this business was attending Coop America's Green Business Conference in May of 2007. Coop America operates on this maxim: "Imagine changing the world by changing the way the world does business." I can, and I do, and it is very exciting!
Aveda's Dominique Conseil spoke at the conference, and left me absolutely blown-away and determined to take the Mercantile to the next level. M. Conseil explained that when the passions and purpose behind one's business are clearly defined, all decision-making becomes easier. This idea seems to resonate with the culture we are striving to create here at the Mercantile and at Dancing Rabbit: respect, communication, care for the earth, and sharing of opportunities.
As per Mr. Conseil we have crafted the following for the Milkweed Mercantile:
What are our passions?
- Living lightly but well upon the earth
- Teaching what we learn
- Integrating earning and life into a seamless whole
- Sharing our prosperity
- Having the time of our lives doing it!
What is our company purpose?
- Creating right livelihood for ourselves and income opportunities for others at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage
- Providing a beautiful, joyous alternative to a traditional B&B
- Sharing accurate information on real solutions for a sustainable life
- Educating and training the next generation
- Selling only products that meet our stringent eco/ethical criteria
If these ideas resonate with your beliefs, I encourage you to support the Milkweed Mercantile, other Coop America businesses, and businesses and organizations which believe there is more to the bottom line than just money.
While we're on the subject, what are you passionate about?
Sincerely,
Alline
