Food From Here
Welcome to the Mercantile Organic Café. We're serving up fresh, local food prepared simply and deliciously. We welcome omnivores, vegetarians and vegans. All will find food they can enjoy and celebrate.
We will serve Peace Coffee, a variety of hot teas, organic and/or local beer and wine, and our own delicious ice tea blend. We always have a mouth-watering selection of baked goods on hand – from brownies to snickerdoodles, to cinnamon rolls to fresh-from-the-oven sourdough bread.
Design – The café is open in design. The kitchen is front and center, placed behind an L-shaped counter. The kitchen is open for a number of reasons – to facilitate cooking classes and demonstrations, to provide a look at whole foods cooking (and show that we're not serving instant mashed potatoes and powdered gravy), and so that the cook and wait staff can easily interact with guests.
Seating – Served at our two large community tables (seating 10-12 each), meals are an opportunity to meet your neighbors, visitors from far away, and members of Dancing Rabbit. Conversation is guaranteed to be lively. There are also four stools at the counter for those who want to watch the ongoing cooking show. In the summer there will be additional small tables set up on the screened in wraparound porch for dining.
Breakfast – We'll be serving coffee & tea, pastries and breakfasts six days a week. Sunday we will serve brunch.
Lunch – Each day we will feature a homemade soup, plus sandwiches and a fantastic assortment of fresh-baked cookies and cakes. All bread made fresh daily.
Pizza & Movie Night – Every Thursday we will feature a fine film and a selection of pizzas. As always, vegan, vegetarian and meat choices are available. Toppings will vary by season. Microbrews and organic wine will also be available. Our Film Schedule will be posted as soon as the building is finished (first things first!).
Weekend Dinner – We will serve fixed price dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, by reservation only.
Each dinner will feature an entrée, two side dishes, bread and dessert. Wine and beer are available for an additional charge. All designated drivers will receive complimentary non-alcoholic drinks.

By serving a fixed menu, we are able to offer you the freshest, in-season food available in the Northeastern Missouri area. This enables us to support local gardeners, farmers, and ranchers and keep prices reasonable.
Menus will be published Wednesday through Saturday here (online), in the Memphis Democrat, and the Kirksville Daily Express. Each meal will feature a vegetarian entrée and an omnivore entrée – you choose when you make your reservation.
